Purpose of the Role
To lead and manage all financial operations for UnityMK, ensuring robust financial control, transparency, and compliance while supporting the organisation’s strategic goals. The Finance Manager will provide clear financial insight and guidance to the CEO and Board, enabling informed decision-making and sustainable growth. Through effective stewardship of resources, the role plays a vital part in maximising the charity’s impact, helping to ensure that UnityMK can continue to support individuals experiencing homelessness and disadvantage across Milton Keynes.
Key Responsibilities
Managing day-to-day financial operations including cashflow, banking, payments, and reporting using Xero
Preparing monthly management accounts, forecasts, and budget analysis with clear commentary and insight
Leading the annual budgeting process and supporting budget holders across the organisation
Managing payroll, pensions, and HMRC submissions
Preparing year-end accounts and liaising with external auditors or independent examiners
Supporting the fundraising team with financial modelling and reporting to funders
Ensuring compliance with financial regulations across charity and company law
Overseeing insurance, licenses, and legal financial responsibilities
Submitting Gift Aid claims and maintaining the fixed asset register
Attending Board meetings to present financial updates and provide guidance

The Candidate
You will be an experienced and confident finance professional who enjoys working autonomously and adding value beyond the numbers.
You will bring:
Proven experience in a Finance Manager or similar role
Strong working knowledge of Xero and Excel
Experience preparing accounts for audit and managing budgets
Ideally, experience within a charity or not-for-profit environment
The ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial colleagues
A proactive, solutions-focused approach with strong organisational skills

Remuneration
Salary: £35,500 to £38,000 pro-rata per annum (depending on experience)
Hours: 20 hours per week – Hybrid working
Holidays: 25 days’ holiday plus statutory days – Pro-rata
Additional: Pension, On-site parking, Employee Discount Scheme
