We are asking teams from local businesses and organisations to help run our new Friday ‘Compassionate Café’ service, providing a hot lunch to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Milton Keynes.
The guests we serve at our Unity Park Station welfare centre could be experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough, sofa surfing or living in temporary accommodation. They may be experiencing loneliness and isolation, or just really need a hot meal and a chat. Whoever they are and whatever their circumstances our Friday ‘Compassionate Café’ service is there to support them.
We are looking for teams of around 5 volunteers who are happy to run the café service, supported by one of our team, between 10:30am and 1pm on a Friday (the service for our guests runs 11am to 12:30pm so we have allowed time to set up and pack down).
The sessions will involve:
Heating up and providing simple food ie. soup, bread, beans on toast etc. in the kitchen
Taking orders at the table and then bringing our guests their meals
Cleaning and tidying the kitchen areas
Talking to our guests
Lending a hand with our other tasks such as sorting donations and helping with laundry.
If your team would like to provide and prepare the food you serve or bring in extras like biscuits and cakes etc. we would be very grateful. Just let us know ahead of time so we can advise on food hygiene and what we are allowed to serve. Please also let us know if you have any skills in your team that you would like to add during the café time e.g. could one of your team offer to help our guests with CV writing, computer skills, property searches etc.?
