Volunteer Role Descriptions

Volunteering with us at UnityMK is a meaningful way to help those facing homelessness, along with an opportunity to meet new people and form new friendships. Whatever your background or skills, we will have a role to suit you.

We have a range of fulfilling roles available across both our welfare centre, Unity Park Station and in our night shelter venues throughout Milton Keynes.

Volunteer roles available at Unity Park Station (CMK)

Unity Park Station provides an important base for our evening reception café, early morning locker access and welfare support for guests staying in our roaming winter night shelters. Available roles are:

  •   Evening Cafe and Guest Interaction Monday - Sunday (5pm-7.30pm): Preparing drinks and snacks, reheating the evening meals (for the guests sleeping in the Milton Keynes Council shelter), welcoming and interacting with guests, supporting welfare and supervising cigarette breaks, cleaning as required

  •  Saturday and Sunday Morning Locker Attendant (7.45am-8.30am): Supervising access to lockers, issuing keys and recalling as needed, making hot drinks. Securing the building after all guests have left

Volunteer roles available at a Winter Night Shelter Venue (across Milton Keynes)

Our wonderful night shelter venues host up to 15 guests per evening – there is a different venue each evening of the week.  An experienced team leader coordinates roles for the team in each venue which include:

  •  Evening Lead Cook (5.30pm-8.30pm) Planning meals, buying ingredients (we support with meal planning and cover food costs) and leading the kitchen team

  •  Evening Kitchen Team (5.30pm-8.30pm) Assisting the lead cook to clean the kitchen, prepare the evening meal and wash up

  •  Evening Set Up and Guest Interaction (6pm−10pm): Set up beds, welcome guests, serve refreshments, socialise & support, eat dinner with the guests, supervise cigarette breaks

  •  Night Duty (9.45pm−7am): 2 shifts taking turns to be available in case of any unexpected eventualities in the night and sleep. The night watch is usually quiet so it is possible to read/relax/study during the shift

  • Morning Kitchen (6.30am−8.30am): Clean kitchen surfaces, prepare and serve breakfast, wash up

  • Morning Set Down (6.30am−8.30am): Strip beds ready for laundering, wipe pillows, spray and put mattresses away, supervise cigarette breaks, tidy up and vacuum
